There are two islands in Kagoshima Prefecture that bear this name. One is in Minamiosumicho, Kimotsukigun, and the other belongs to Shibushi City. The former is located in the Osumi Strait, about 1 km northeast of Cape Sata, the southernmost point of Kyushu, and is a small island with a circumference of about 1.4 km, an area of 0.05 square kilometers, and a maximum height of 59 meters. The latter is located near the center of Shibushi Bay, about 5 km from Shibushi Port, with a circumference of about 4 km and a maximum height of 83 meters. Both islands are uninhabited. As the names suggest, both islands are entirely covered with palm trees, and other subtropical vegetation is also prominent. The former was incorporated into Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park) in 1964, and the latter was incorporated into Nichinan Kaigan Quasi-National Park. The subtropical plant community of Birou Island in Shibushi Bay has been designated a Special Natural Monument.
