A French secret society. In the 1830s, under the July Monarchy in France, there were frequent liberal reform movements by republicans inside and outside of parliament, and movements and uprisings by the working masses, centered on strikes. Some organizations, such as the Society for the Rights of Man, formed in solidarity with the two groups. The government responded by strengthening its repression, destroying anti-establishment movements and organizations. The Society for the Rights of Man was formed in response to this situation. It was founded in 1837 by Blanqui, a revolutionary who stood in the tradition of Babeuf's egalitarianism and Buonarroti's secret society movement, along with Barbès and Martin Bernard (1808-83), and its membership is estimated at between 600 and 1,000.
