According to the Kanmon Nikki, six Jizo statues were made from the bones of corpses killed in the Oei famine in the early Muromachi period. In 1887, Isshinji Temple (Tennoji Ward, Osaka City), known as the "Temple of the Bone Buddha," crushed the bones of about 50,000 bodies that had been interred at the temple since 1851 (Kaei 4) into powder, added seaweed, and kneaded the first Amida statue. Since then, it has been an internal rule to knead the statue every 10 years.
