An art group for Western painting. It was founded in 1935 (Showa 10) when the Imperial Fine Arts Academy was reorganized and Arishima Ikuma, Ishii Hakutei, Yasui Sotaro, and Yamashita Shintaro, who were elders of the Nikakai at the time, were appointed as members of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy and left the independent art group Nikakai. They then conspired with Koyama Keizo, Kinoshita Takanori, Kinoshita Yoshinori, and Hazamai Inosuke, who had also left the Nikakai, to form the Issuikai in December of the following year (1961) with the aim of "disapproving of exhibition art, valuing technique, and respecting refined art." The first exhibition was held in December 1962, and since then, public exhibitions have been held every autumn, and many artists with a solid tendency toward realism have been added, making it a powerful support group for the Nitten Exhibition. Furthermore, a ceramics club was established in 1983 (Showa 33) with the participation of Arakawa Toyozo, Sakaida Kakiemon and others, but it is now separate.
