Livistona chinensis R.Br.var.subglobosa Becc.
A tall palm tree native to warm regions of Japan, it can reach a height of 20 m (illustration). The petiole can reach 2 m in length, with two rows of inverted thorns at the bottom. The leaves are reniform fan-shaped, palmately lobed or deeply lobed, about 1 m in diameter, with slender lobes 1.8 to 2 m wide, slender pointed at the apex, deeply lobed in two, and drooping. In spring, panicles about 1 m long appear from the leaf axils, bearing numerous small yellow-green flowers. The fruit is a drupe, elliptical or obovate, about 1.5 cm long, ripens to a celadon color, and contains one seed.

日本の暖地に自生するヤシ科の高木で,高さ20mに達する(イラスト)。葉柄は長さ2mに達し,下部には2列の逆とげがある。葉は腎状扇形で掌状に中裂または深裂し,直径1mくらい,裂片は細長く,幅1.8~2m,頂端は細長くとがり2深裂して下垂する。春,葉腋(ようえき)から長さ1mくらいの円錐花序を出し,多数の黄緑色の小さい花をつける。果実は核果で,楕円形または倒卵形で,長さ1.5cmぐらい,青磁色に熟し,なかに1個の種子を有する。
