A general term for birds in the family Phalaropodidae in the order Charadriiformes. A small snipe with a thin beak. It has short legs and flipper-like webbed toes. It is an excellent swimmer. In summer plumage, males are lighter in colour than females, and are responsible for nesting, incubating eggs and raising chicks. After laying eggs, females leave the nesting site and live in small groups. They build dish-shaped nests on the ground near water and lay four eggs per clutch. チドリ目ヒレアシシギ科Phalaropodidaeの鳥の総称。小型のシギでくちばしは細い。脚は短く,あしゆびにひれ状の水かきのあるのが特徴。泳ぐのはうまい。夏羽では雄は雌よりも羽色がじみで,営巣,抱卵,育雛(いくすう)を行う。雌は産卵すると営巣地を離れ,小群で生活する。水辺の地上に皿形の巣をつくり,1腹4個の卵を産む。世界に1属3種がある。アカエリヒレアシシギPhalaropus lobatus(英名red‐necked phalarope)(イラスト)は全長約20cm。
