...Thus, after the Protestant Reformation and the French Revolution, the French National Library (Bibliothèque Nationale) absorbed the libraries of monasteries and nobles, and today has a collection of over 6 million books. Meanwhile, in England, the library of Oxford University (called the Bodleian Library in honor of Thomas Bodley, who played a key role in reviving the library), which began as a private library in the 15th century, became a depository library in the 17th century through a contract with a bookseller, and today it has grown to a library with 2 million books and 40,000 manuscripts. The British Museum library was also established through the merger of many private libraries, including those of the royal family, and now has a collection of over 6.5 million books.

...This system was established in 1537 by King Francis I of France to increase the number of books in his royal library. In England, voluntary deposit was first implemented in 1610 based on a gentleman's agreement between Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) and the Guild of Book Publishers. In 1662, the Bodleian Library and the Royal Library of Oxford University, as well as the Cambridge University Library, were granted special privileges under the deposit system, but this was not intended to secure the library's collection, but rather to prevent the publication of blasphemous or potentially disturbing books. ...

…この制度は,フランスのフランソア1世が,1537年,その王室図書館の蔵書を増やすために設けたことにはじまる。イギリスでは1610年,ボドリーThomas Bodley(1545‐1613)と書籍出版商組合の間の紳士協定にもとづいて自発的な納本が行われたのが最初。さらに62年の出版条例により,オックスフォード大学のボドレーアン図書館と王立図書館,それにケンブリッジ大学図書館が納本制度による特権を得ているが,これは図書館の蔵書を確保するという面より,瀆聖(とくせい)的内容のものや治安を乱すおそれのあるものの刊行を防止するためのものであった。…
