Meanwhile, in England, the library of Oxford University (called the Bodleian Library in honor of Thomas Bodley, who played a key role in reviving the library), which began as a private library in the 15th century, became a depository library in the 17th century through a contract with a bookseller, and today it has grown to a library with 2 million books and 40,000 manuscripts. ...This system was established in 1537 by King Francis I of France to increase the number of books in his royal library. In England, voluntary deposit was first implemented in 1610 based on a gentleman's agreement between Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) and the Guild of Book Publishers. In 1662, the Bodleian Library and the Royal Library of Oxford University, as well as the Cambridge University Library, were granted special privileges under the deposit system, but this was not intended to secure the library's collection, but rather to prevent the publication of blasphemous or potentially disturbing books. ...
