Mount Koya overcame the effects of the anti-Buddhist movement around the time of the Meiji Restoration and the chaos that followed the lifting of the ban on women entering the temple in 1872 (Meiji 5), and from the end of the Meiji period onwards, the area began to be restored, with a rapid increase in town houses and merchant houses.
