A gold-producing region in the northern part of South Africa, centered on Johannesburg, the capital of Gauteng Province. Gold was first discovered in 1886. The gold-bearing Witwatersrand system belongs to the Precambrian era, and forms a large syncline stretching about 72 km north to south and 190 km east to west with seven layers of gold-bearing conglomerate. This gold deposit is called a reef. The area is a plateau at an altitude of 1,500 to 1,800 m, but the working depth is 200 to 3,500 m from the surface. In the 1930s, it was discovered that pitchblende, a uranium ore, was present in the gold deposits, and waste rock from gold smelting was reprocessed as uranium ore to produce yellowcake, U3O8 . The area around the central city of Johannesburg is a heavy industrial area. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
