…In 1579, the university was founded and the city became the centre of Denmark in both name and reality. It was devastated during the Earl's Wars (1535-36), but flourished under Christian IV. He expanded the port, founding Kristianshavn, enlarged the city limits, and built Rosenborg Castle, Nyboder, a residential area for sailors, and many other monumental buildings, such as the Round Tower, in the new city. In 1658, the city was besieged by the armies of King Charles X of Sweden, but the citizens fought bravely under Frederick III. …
