During the development of vertebrates, the neural tube forms as the primordium of the central nervous system, and a thickened portion appears at the tip of the tube, with three constrictions in the anterior-posterior direction. These are the telencephalon, midbrain, and rhombencephalon, and the posteriormost rhombencephalon is also called the hindbrain (broadly speaking). As development progresses, the rhombencephalon is constricted into two, forming the hindbrain (which later becomes the cerebellar pons) in the front and the medulla oblongata in the rear. The inner cavity of the rhombencephalon is called the fourth ventricle.

脊椎動物の発生の際，神経管が中枢神経系の原基として形成されてくるが，その先端部に肥厚肥大部が現れ，前後方向に3つのくびれが生じてくる。端脳，中脳，菱脳がそれで，最後部の菱脳を後脳 (広義) ともいう。発生が進むと菱脳は2つにくびれて，前方に後脳 (のちに小脳橋に区分されてくる) ，後方に延髄ができてくる。菱脳の内腔は第四脳室と呼ばれている。
