A village in Kiso County, southwest of Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,638 (1995). Located in the northwest of the Kiso Mountains, most of the village area is covered by forests and wilderness. Miyanokoshi, the central settlement, was once a post station on the Nakasendo road. Paddy fields have been developed along the Kiso River, and rice farming has been the main focus, but in recent years beef cattle breeding and floriculture have become popular. The Kisokoma Plateau spreads out downstream of the Masazawa River, which originates at the northwest foot of Mt. Komagatake and flows into the Kiso River. There are golf courses, skating rinks, and villa areas, and tourism development is underway. The village name Higi is derived from the Asahi Shogun Minamoto no Yoshinaka, and the village is home to Hatagami Hachiman Shrine, where Yoshinaka is said to have raised his flag, Tokuon-ji Temple, his family temple, and the Yoshinaka Museum, which exhibits materials related to Yoshinaka.
