Tama

Japanese:
Tama

A tanka magazine. Presided over by Kitahara Hakushu. First published in June 1935 (Showa 10), it ceased publication in December 1952. Hakushu, who felt a sense of crisis about the realist and prosaic tendencies represented by "Araragi" at the time, founded the Tama Tanka Society with the aim of reviving the romantic spirit and symbolic methods, and creating tanka with a new mysterious style. "Tama" was the society's journal, advocating a fourth symbolic movement following "Shin Kokin Wakashu," Matsuo Basho, and Shinshisha's "Myojo." At the time of its founding, Hozumi Kiyoshi, Kimata Osamu, Nakamura Shoji, Tatsumi Seika, Kitami Shihoko, Hatsui Shizue and other influential poets, followed by Miya Shuji, Suzuki Kosuke, Suzuki Hideo and other influential poets, came together to form a major anti-Araragi organization. However, with the death of Hakushu in 1942, it lost its unifying power, and although it maintained its operations through a committee system, it was dissolved in 1952. It was subsequently succeeded by Miya's Cosmos, Kimata's Keisei and Nakamura's Chuo Line.
