The phrase in the Apostles' Creed confession of Jesus, "He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary," is usually called the "virgin birth" and is considered to represent the faith of Christians. However, the Bible only speaks of this in the so-called Nativity stories in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and Mark, John, and Paul do not mention it at all. Therefore, some Christians do not recognize the need to take this as seriously as they do the faith in Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

使徒信条のイエスに対する告白の中に述べられている句，〈主は聖霊によりてやどり，処女マリアより生まれ〉の内容を通常〈処女降誕〉と称し，キリスト者の信仰を表すものとされている。しかしこれについて聖書はマタイとルカ両福音書の，いわゆる降誕物語において語っているのみであって，マルコ，ヨハネ，パウロはまったくこれにふれていない。それゆえキリスト者の中にも，これをイエスの十字架と復活への信仰ほどに重大に受けとる必要を認めない者もある。
