Located in Sakamoto, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. In the past, it was called "Hie" and written as Hie. Formerly a government-sponsored grand shrine. The main deity enshrined at the eastern main shrine is Oyamakui-no-mikoto, and the western main shrine is Oonamuchi-no-mikoto. Since ancient times, it has been called Sanno or Sanno Gongen, and is the head shrine of all Hiyoshi (Hie) shrines across the country. The deity enshrined is the local deity of Mount Hiei, and it is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Sujin. It is a famous grand shrine listed in the Engishiki, and as the guardian shrine of Enryaku-ji Temple, it has shared its rise and fall. Especially since Emperor Go-Sanjo, successive emperors have visited the shrine, and many ministers, shoguns, and ordinary people have visited the shrine. With this as a backdrop, the monks of Enryaku-ji Temple carried portable shrines and made strong appeals to the imperial court. In 1571, the main shrine building was burned down by Oda Nobunaga, and the current structure was rebuilt after 1586. The two main shrines, designated as national treasures, are in the typical Hiyoshi style, with a red torii gate called Sanno torii, which has a gabled roof on top. The annual festival in April has been famous since ancient times as the Sanno Festival. The grounds of the nationally designated historic site include the various worship halls, tower gates, and Hiyoshi Sanbashi Bridge, and are designated as important cultural properties along with the seven mikoshi portable shrines. → Sanno faith / Sanno Ichimi Shinto → Related topics Aichi-so | Sakamoto | Tanaka-so | Lake Biwa Quasi-National ParkHiyoshi Taisha ShrineSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
