臍（へそ）の緒のこと。臍帯血とは、その名の通りへその緒に含まれる血液のことです。この臍帯血に含まれる「造血幹細胞」を移植して白血病などの患者さんの造血力を回復させる治療法があります。提供は「公的臍帯血バンク」と提携している産科医療機関でのみ可能です。一方、民間事業者（いわゆるプライベートバンク）は公的臍帯血バンクとは異なります。ご自身や赤ちゃん本人に万が一のことがあった場合にという目的でプライベートバンクに臍帯血を保管委託する場合は、保管方法や契約内容を慎重に確認することが重要です。
