This type of agriculture is located far from markets, and takes advantage of the advantageous natural conditions of the climate and soil to produce vegetables for markets at a different time than those for nearby produce. It is so named because large-scale transportation is carried out by public transport. The disadvantage of distance is compensated for by forcing cultivation and retarded cultivation, and management tends to be highly specialized and intensive, with large-scale investment of capital and labor. Early-shipping types take advantage of the warm climate, and in Japan cucumbers, eggplants, strawberries, tomatoes, etc. are grown in Izu, Boso, Kochi, Miyazaki, etc., while summer-shipping types are grown in cold, high-altitude areas such as Tohoku, Hokkaido, and Nagano, where cucumbers, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, etc., which are difficult to produce in warm areas, are grown.
