A village in Kitauwa District, southwest of Ehime Prefecture. Population 2,081 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Hiromi River, a tributary of the Shimanto River, it is surrounded by mountains 900 to 1,000 meters above sea level. Most of the village area is forest, and in the early modern period, during the Yoshida Domain era, this area was called "deep in the mountains." It borders Kochi Prefecture to the south and east. During the Edo period, the paper industry was thriving in Hyugai and other areas, but in 1792 (Kansei 4), the Yoshida Domain implemented a paper monopoly, which led to a large-scale uprising the following year. The central figure, Takezaemon, was from Kamioono, and the uprising is known as the Yoshida Disturbance or the Takezaemon Uprising. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
