Although a machined surface may appear flat, a closer look reveals small irregular bumps on top of large wavy bumps. Surface roughness is a quantity related to the geometric shape, that is, the bumps and recesses that occur at small intervals on the surface that give rise to the sensation of a rough or smooth surface. Surface roughness, along with dimensional deviation and shape deviation, is an important item for evaluating the quality of machined parts. When a machined surface is cut on a plane perpendicular to it, the shape of the surface at the cut is called the cross-sectional curve. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
