Ryuko Kawakatsu

…A literati painter of the late Edo period. Born in Shimotsuke. His given name was Cho, his pen name was Ziyuan, and he was commonly known as Shusuke. In addition to Aigai, he was also known by the names Sekikaku, Josho, and Soringaishi. He is said to have first studied painting under Setsuko, who was thought to be a painter from his hometown, but later studied literati painting himself under Ike Taiga and Ifukyu, an artist from overseas who came from the Qing Dynasty. He seems to have gone to Edo to study under Tani Buncho, but he also traveled to Kyoto to study, and while in Edo, he protected the tradition of literati painting in Japan through his friendship with Kanto literati painters such as Watanabe Kazan and Tachihara Kyosho. After Aigai's death, Ryuko (1810-58), the third son of Kawakatsu Takatani, who was a chief retainer of Abe no Kami, the lord of Shirakawa Domain, temporarily succeeded him and took the name Takakusa, but later switched to the restored Yamato-e school. …

…江戸後期の文人画家。下野の人。名は徴,字は子遠,通称秋輔。靄厓のほか石窠,如樵,疎林外史と号す。初め絵を郷里の画家と思われる雪耕に学んだといわれるが,その後,池大雅や清の来舶画人伊孚九(いふきゆう)に私淑し,文人画を自ら学んだ。江戸へ出て谷文晁に師事したようであるが,京都へ遊学したり,江戸では渡辺崋山や立原杏所ら関東文人画家との交友の中で,日本における文人画の伝統を守った。靄厓没後は白河藩主阿部侯の家老であった川勝隆任の三男隆古(りゆうこ)(1810‐58)が一時その家を継いで高久氏を名乗ったが,のちに復古大和絵派に転じた。…
