Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros

Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros
1436‐1517
A Spanish Franciscan priest who left a significant mark on Spanish politics, culture, and religion during the time of the Catholic Monarchs. After studying at the University of Salamanca, Cisneros joined the Franciscan order, and in 1492, despite being a commoner, he was called to the royal court as confessor to Queen Isabella, and three years later he was appointed Archbishop of Toledo. Around this time, with the support of the two kings, he began reforming the church, including the various religious orders, and pushed ahead with this despite much resistance. However, he also took a hard-line stance against the Kingdom of Granada, which had just been conquered, forcing Muslims to convert and advising the two kings to expel them in 1502.
