...there is a central tube through which steam and liquid pass, and a jacket tube that holds a coolant (usually tap water) is attached around it. Those without a jacket tube are cooled by air, so they are also called air coolers (a in the figure). Figures c, d, and e are all designed to improve cooling efficiency more than the Liebig type.
