A pioneering group in the modern architecture movement in Japan. Founded in 1920 by six students from the Department of Architecture at the University of Tokyo, including Horiguchi Sutemi, the group held seven exhibitions by 1928. Although the name was derived from the Secession, there was no direct influence from it. They declared that they wanted to "separate themselves from the realm of past architecture," and, in opposition to the then-dominant tendency to view architecture from the perspective of science and technology, they asserted that "architecture is an art form."
