Year of death: January 28, 1927 Year of birth: 6/2/1867 (7/3/1867) A novelist from the Meiji period. His real name was Sukesaburo. His pen names were Amaka Itshi, Jiritei, and Hifumi. He was born in Yokohama. He was the eldest son of Masakata, an English scholar who became a chamberlain to Emperor Meiji. His grandfather was Ishibashi Sukezaemon, a Nagasaki interpreter. He studied at Gakushuin and Shinbungakusha before moving on to the Faculty of Law and then the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo, before dropping out. In 1885, he founded the Kenyusha company with Ozaki Koyo and others, and published his debut work, Akusakura Yuri Noyoarashi, in Garakuta Bunko. He is known for works such as Otomegokoro and Kyokanoko, published in the same year, but his style was strongly influenced by comedy. He worked for the Isami Shimbun Company in 1893, and published Chukyo Shimbun in 1897, Dandan Chinbun in 1909, and Chuo Shimbun in 1901, before moving to the Yomiuri Shimbun as head of the social affairs department. He then joined Hakubunkan, where he edited Bungei Club until he left the company in 1916.
