A thermometer for measuring the temperature of the surface layer of an object. They are broadly divided into contact and non-contact types. Examples of the former include small thermocouple thermometers and thermistor thermometers that are pressed against the surface of an object to measure the temperature, but care must be taken not to change the surface temperature itself by pressing the thermometer against it. On the other hand, representative examples of non-contact types are various radiation thermometers, which are virtually unlikely to change the surface temperature when used, but the emissivity of the surface must be known in order to determine the true temperature from the apparent temperature of the surface.
