Abalone - Abalone

Japanese: アワビ(鮑) - アワビ
Abalone - Abalone
A gastropod shell of the Haliotidae family. A general term for three species of abalone: Madaka awabi, Mekai awabi (also called Mengai or Megai), Kuro awabi (also called Ongai or Ogai), and Ezo awabi, a subspecies of Kuro awabi. Almost oval in shape, the shell is brown on the outside and has a strong pearly luster on the inside. There are drainage holes on the back of the shell, and feces are also excreted from here. Some Madaka awabi and Kuro awabi can reach 20 cm in length, but others are slightly smaller. They live on reefs from the intertidal zone to a depth of 20 m from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and northern China. They feed on brown algae such as Eisenia bifida, Wakame, and Ecklonia cava. The spawning season is August to September in Hokkaido and November to December in the Boso Peninsula. In addition to transplanting and releasing young shells, cultivation techniques using artificial insemination have progressed. The meat is edible. The shell is used for shell crafts and buttons. → Tokobushi → Related article Cultured pearls
