Hime Shijimi (English name) silver-studded blue

A butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, but is found only in limited areas west of the Kinki region, and in Kyushu it is restricted to the Kuju mountain range. The wingspan is about 29 mm. The upper part of the male's wings is purple-blue or blue-blue with a black border, but the width of this black border is generally wider in those from warmer regions and narrower in those from colder regions. The upper part of the female's wings is black-brown with an orange band on the sub-outer edge of the hindwings. The underside is almost the same color, but the female is slightly browner than the male. They emerge once a year, from June to August, and hibernate in the egg stage. The larvae mainly feed on Asteraceae plants such as Japanese thistle and Japanese yarrow, and legumes such as Astragalus membranaceus and Hedera membranaceus. Other food plants that may be used are those of the Rosaceae, Polygonaceae, Saxifragaceae, and Salicaceae families.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目シジミチョウ科に属するチョウ。北海道、本州、九州に分布するが、近畿地方以西では産地は局部的で、九州では九重(くじゅう)連山に限られる。はねの開張29ミリ内外。雄の翅表は紫藍(しらん)色ないし青藍色で、黒い縁どりがあるが、この黒縁の幅は一般に暖地産では広く、寒冷地に産するものでは狭い。雌の翅表は黒褐色、後ろばねの亜外縁に橙(だいだい)色帯がある。裏面もほぼ同色であるが、雌は雄に比べてやや褐色みを帯びる。年1回の発生、6～8月に出現し、卵の状態で越年する。幼虫のおもな食草は、マアザミ、ヤマボクチなどのキク科植物およびタイツリオウギ、イワオウギなどのマメ科植物。そのほかバラ科、タデ科、ユキノシタ科、ヤナギ科植物も食草となることがある。
