Wisteria cloth - Fujinuno

A plain weave fabric made by taking the fibers from wisteria bark, spinning them, and then weaving them. In areas where hemp fiber is not available in sufficient quantities, various miscellaneous fibers have been used since ancient times, but hemp has been woven for personal use especially in the Hokuriku to San'in regions and their mountainous areas. It is used for making kimonos, as well as for the edges of tatami mats and rice bags. It has almost completely disappeared, but some remains in Shimoseya, Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture.

フジの皮の繊維をとり、紡績したのち製織した平織の織物。麻繊維が十分に得られない地方では、いろいろの雑繊維が古くから使われたが、とくに北陸から山陰地方にかけての地方とそれぞれの山間部で自家用として製織されてきた。用途は、着尺のほか、畳の縁(へり)、米袋などに使われる。現在ではほとんど絶えてしまったが、京都府宮津市下世屋(しもせや)に一部残されている。
