1883‐1942 A Dutch socialist, he was a member of the Social Democratic Labor Party before moving to Java in 1913. He worked as an editor for a commercial newspaper in Surabaya, then moved to Semarang, where he worked as a "socialist missionary." In 1914, he founded the Social Democratic Union of East Indies (the precursor to the Indonesian Communist Party) with Dutch residents. At the time, the center of Indonesia's nationalist movement was the Islamic League, but he used local activists such as Semaung to create factions within the Islamic League, expanding the influence of the Social Democratic League and laying the foundations for the socialist movement in Indonesia.
