The capital of Orissa state in eastern India. Located in the western corner of the Mahanadi River delta, it was a small village until it became the state capital in 1947. It developed as the administrative center of the state. There are Jain cave temples and about 500 Hindu and Buddhist buildings and ruins, and the Lingaraja Temple is famous.
