The main allotropes are amorphous, monoclinic, and gray (metallic) selenium. Amorphous selenium is produced in black (red in thin layers) glass form obtained by rapid cooling of molten selenium, and in red powder form obtained by reduction of selenite. Powdered selenium is soluble in carbon disulfide, and the crimson-colored α- and β-monoclinic forms are produced when the solution is evaporated and crystallized below 72°C.
