A character in Joruri and Kabuki. The bannerman Kikuchi Hankuro tries to buy the Gion courtesan Osome by exchanging her heirloom sword for money, but accidentally kills his friend's younger brother and the two commit double suicide. Chikamatsu Monzaemon wrote a play based on the double suicide that took place in Toribeyama, Kyoto in 1626. In 1915, Okamoto Kido's play "Toribeyama Shinju" became popular.
