Osome Hankuro - Osome Hankuro
A character in Joruri and Kabuki.
The bannerman Kikuchi Hankuro tries to buy the Gion courtesan Osome by exchanging her heirloom sword for money, but accidentally kills his friend's younger brother and the two commit double suicide. Chikamatsu Monzaemon wrote a play based on the double suicide that took place in Toribeyama, Kyoto in 1626. In 1915, Okamoto Kido's play "Toribeyama Shinju" became popular.

浄瑠璃(じょうるり),歌舞伎の登場人物。
旗本菊地半九郎は祇園(ぎおん)の遊女お染を,家宝の刀を金にかえ身請けしようとするが,たまたま友人の弟を殺してしまい,ふたりは心中する。寛永3年(1626)京都鳥辺山でおきた心中事件を題材に近松門左衛門が作品化。大正4年には岡本綺堂の戯曲「鳥辺山心中」が評判となる。
