Bihoro Pass

Japanese: 美幌峠 - びほろとうげ

This pass is located on the border between Bihoro Town under the jurisdiction of the Okhotsk General Bureau and Teshikaga Town under the jurisdiction of the Kushiro General Bureau in eastern Hokkaido. It is the saddle of the outer rim of the Kussharo Caldera, and separates the slope of the Pacific Ocean from the slope of the Sea of Okhotsk. It is 525 meters above sea level. National Route 243 crosses the pass, connecting Bihoro and Teshikaga, and is the northern entrance to Akan Mashu National Park. The surrounding area is covered with grasslands mainly made of bamboo grass, and is known for its magnificent distant views, as well as the view of Lake Kussharo below.

Lake Kussharo

北海道東部、オホーツク総合振興局管内の美幌町と釧路(くしろ)総合振興局管内の弟子屈町(てしかがちょう)の境界にある峠。屈斜路カルデラ外輪山の鞍部(あんぶ)にあたり、太平洋斜面とオホーツク海斜面を分けている。標高525メートル。国道243号はこの峠を越えて美幌と弟子屈とを結び、阿寒摩周(あかんましゅう)国立公園の北の入口になっている。付近一帯はササを主とする草原で、眼下に屈斜路湖の全容を望むほか壮大な遠望をもって知られている。
