This pass is located on the border between Bihoro Town under the jurisdiction of the Okhotsk General Bureau and Teshikaga Town under the jurisdiction of the Kushiro General Bureau in eastern Hokkaido. It is the saddle of the outer rim of the Kussharo Caldera, and separates the slope of the Pacific Ocean from the slope of the Sea of Okhotsk. It is 525 meters above sea level. National Route 243 crosses the pass, connecting Bihoro and Teshikaga, and is the northern entrance to Akan Mashu National Park. The surrounding area is covered with grasslands mainly made of bamboo grass, and is known for its magnificent distant views, as well as the view of Lake Kussharo below.
