…There are six species that live on land and five that live in coastal waters in Japan, but some of them are American red-eared sliders that were kept as pets and escaped and settled here. In English, the large ones that live in the sea and a few rivers are called turtles, and the land ones are called tortoises, but in America, turtles are generally called turtles.
