Pillow Jido - Makurajido

Noh piece. The fourth piece. Current work of Konparu, Hosho, Kongo, and Kita schools. However, Konparu school is a revival from the Showa era. In Kanze school, this Noh is called "Kiku Jido". Kanze school's "Makura Jido" is another Noh with the same theme set 800 years later, and is an adaptation from the Edo period. An envoy (waki) from Emperor Wen of Wei, who is asking about medicinal water springing up in the deep mountains, meets Jido (shite), who has lived for 700 years as a beautiful young boy. Jido, who served King Mu of Zhou, was banished to these deep mountains for the crime of stepping over the emperor's pillow, but thanks to a passage from the Lotus Sutra written on the pillow and the miracle of dew on the chrysanthemum leaves, he lives in the immortal world. Jido dances beautifully and ends by offering the medicinal water of longevity to the emperor. In the Kongo school, there is a rendition of the now-omitted first act, in which the child is abandoned in the mountains, and a similar piece, "Houso." In addition, a Nagauta based on this Noh play is "Makura Jido," composed in 1860 (Man'en 1) by the 11th Kineya Rokuzaemon (commonly known as Negishi no Kangoro).

能の曲目。四番目物。金春(こんぱる)、宝生(ほうしょう)、金剛、喜多(きた)流現行曲。ただし金春流は昭和の復曲。観世(かんぜ)流ではこの能を『菊慈童』とよぶ。観世流の『枕慈童』は時代を800年後に設定した同じ主題の別の能で、江戸時代の改作である。深山に湧(わ)く薬の水を尋ねる魏(ぎ)の文帝の使者（ワキ）は、700年を美少年の姿のまま生きる慈童（シテ）と出会う。周の穆(ぼく)王に仕えた慈童は、帝の枕をまたいだ罪でこの深山に流されたが、枕に書かれた法華経(ほけきょう)の文章と、菊の葉の露の奇跡で、不老不死の仙界に生きている。慈童は美しく舞い、長寿の薬の水を帝に捧(ささ)げて終わる。金剛流には、現在は省略されている前場、慈童が山に捨てられる場面も演ずる演出が残っており、類曲の『彭祖(ほうそ)』がある。なお、この能による長唄(ながうた)に1860年（万延1）11世杵屋六左衛門(きねやろくざえもん)（通称根岸の勘五郎）作曲による『枕慈童』がある。
