A town in Shiwa County in central Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River flows south through the center, and the Tohoku Main Line and Tohoku Expressway pass through it. The center is Hizume, where the Shiba clan built Kosui-ji Castle in the mid-Kamakura period, and in the Edo period it flourished as a post station on the Oshu Kaido road and a key location for shipping along the Kitakami River. Rice, fruit, and vegetable production is thriving. In 1954, the Sannokai Dam was completed in the west, and fields were opened up through irrigation. 岩手県中部,紫波郡の町。中部を北上川が南流し東北本線,東北自動車道が通じる。中心は鎌倉中期に斯波(しば)氏が高水寺城を築いた日詰で,江戸時代には奥州街道の宿駅,北上川舟運の要地として栄えた。米,果樹,野菜の生産が盛ん。1954年西部に山王海ダムが完成,灌漑(かんがい)による開田が行われた。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。238.98km2。3万3288人(2010)。
