This is a document of faith drafted by Luther in 1537 and presented to the Lutheran Schmalkaldic League. The previous year, Pope Paul III had decided to convene a council, and the Elector of Saxony ordered Luther to clarify his position on evangelical faith and had him write it. It was not adopted at the council and did not become an official document of the league, but it played an important role as a Lutheran confession of faith and was included in the Creed of Concordat in 1580.
