King of Sweden. Reigned 1611-32. Also known as Gustav Adolf. First son of Duke Karl of Sweden. His father fought against Sigismund III of Sweden and Poland (Adolf's cousin) and drove him from Sweden. He became regent (1599) and then king (1604-11). After his death, Adolf, who was not yet 17 years old, inherited the Swedish throne and also conflicts and feuds with Denmark, Russia, and Poland. He was at a disadvantage in the Kalmar War (1611-13) with Denmark, and with the mediation of King James I of England, he negotiated the peace treaty of Knäred, but he was forced to pay heavy indemnities.

スウェーデン国王。在位1611‐32年。グスタブ･アドルフともよばれる。スウェーデンの公カールの長子として生まれる。父は，スウェーデン王兼ポーランド王ジグムント3世(アドルフの従兄)と争ってこれをスウェーデンから追い，摂政(1599)，ついで王となり(1604‐11)，死後，17歳に満たぬアドルフに，スウェーデン王位とともにデンマーク，ロシア，ポーランドとの紛争･確執を残す。　デンマークとのカルマル戦争(1611‐13)は劣勢で，イングランド王ジェームズ1世の調停をえてクネレドKnäredの和議を結ぶが，過酷な賠償を負う。
