1594‐1632 King of Sweden. Reigned 1611-32. Also known as Gustav Adolf. First son of Duke Karl of Sweden. His father fought against Sigismund III of Sweden and Poland (Adolf's cousin) and drove him from Sweden. He became regent (1599) and then king (1604-11). After his death, Adolf, who was not yet 17 years old, inherited the Swedish throne and also conflicts and feuds with Denmark, Russia, and Poland. He was at a disadvantage in the Kalmar War (1611-13) with Denmark, and with the mediation of King James I of England, he negotiated the peace treaty of Knäred, but he was forced to pay heavy indemnities.
