Gijón (English spelling)

A port city in the province of Oviedo in the Asturias region in northern Spain. Population 266,419 (2001). Facing the Bay of Biscay. The old town, which originated in Roman times, was built on the small peninsula of the Santa Catalina Hills. The first jetty was built in the early 15th century, and the city center developed along the bay after that. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), the city suffered major damage, and the current city center was built on the site. Old buildings remain, such as the Palace of the Marquis of Revillagigedo (15th century) and the Palace of the Marquis of Valdes (1590). The industrial area is located inland to the south of the residential area and on the coast along the outer port of El Mousserre, about 6 km northwest. The port is known as a coal shipping port, and the nearby Bellinha Steelworks is one of Spain's most modern steelworks. Other industries include chemicals and food.

スペイン北部、アストゥリアス地方オビエド県にある港湾都市。人口26万6419（2001）。ビスケー（ビスカヤ）湾に面する。ローマ時代起源の古い町は、小半島状のサンタ・カタリナ丘陵の上に建設された。最初の突堤が15世紀前半に築かれ、その後は湾岸沿いにも市街地が発達した。スペイン内戦時（1936～39）には大きな戦災を被り、現在の市街地はその跡に計画的に建設された。レビリャヒヘド侯の宮殿（15世紀）、バルデス侯の宮殿（1590）など、古い建物が残る。工業地区は住宅地の南側内陸部と、北西約6キロメートルにある外港エルムゼル港に沿う海岸部にある。港は石炭の積出し港として知られ、近くのベリニャ製鉄所はスペイン屈指の近代的製鉄所。他に化学、食品などの工業がある。
