A Rinzai sect monk in the mid-Kamakura period. His pen name was Enni. His posthumous name was Shoichi Kokushi. He was from Suruga Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). At the age of five, he studied the Kushiyaju under Gyoben at Mount Kuno, and at the age of 18, he went to Onjo-ji Temple (Mii-dera Temple) to study Tendai Esoteric Buddhism, and then took the ordination at Todai-ji Temple. He also studied the Rinzai Zen of the Oryu school under Eisho at Choraku-ji Temple in Kozuke and Gyoyu at Jufuku-ji Temple in Kamakura. In 1235 (the first year of the Kasei era), he entered Song China and visited various Zen masters at mountains, including Chizetsu Dochu at Mount Tendo. Afterwards, he accompanied Bushun Shihan at Mount Keizan and succeeded him in his teachings.

鎌倉中期の臨済宗の僧。字は円爾(えんに)。諡(おくりな)は聖一(しよういち)国師。駿河国(静岡県)の人。5歳で久能山の尭弁(ぎようべん)について《俱舎頌(くしやじゆ)》を学び,18歳のとき園城(おんじよう)寺(三井寺)に赴いて天台密教を修め,ついで東大寺に登壇受戒した。一方,上野(こうずけ)長楽寺の栄朝,鎌倉寿福寺の行勇に参じ,黄竜(おうりよう)派の臨済禅をも学んだ。1235年(嘉禎1)入宋し,天童山の癡絶道冲(ちぜつどうちゆう)ら各山の禅匠を歴参したのち,径山(きんざん)の無準師範(ぶしゆんしばん)に随従し,彼の法を継いだ。
