Born: December 7, 1866 (Keio 1) in Komatsu, Iyo Died in 1920. Kyoto, Tanba Ayabe military officer, Asian traveler. Graduated from the Military Academy in 1889. 1902-04: Engaged in intelligence activities on the border between Qing and Korea, and served in the Russo-Japanese War. In 1906, ordered to inspect Xinjiang, he traveled with Wu Luzhen through Baoding and Zhengzhou, met up with Otani Kozui in Shanzhou, and accompanied him to Xi'an. Wu Luzhen was arrested in Lanzhou and sent back to Beijing. He passed through Hami and Turfan, reached Urumqi, and inspected the seven cities of Ili. He traveled from Kalashahr, Kucha, Aksu, Kashgar, and Yarkand to Leh in Ladakh and Srinagar in Kashmir, crossing the Karakoram Mountains, and boarded a ship from Calcutta to return to Kobe in December 1907. His observations were recorded in the Ili Travelogue (1909). He later investigated the activities of the Soshato during the Xinhai Revolution, and retired with the rank of colonel in 1913 to work in business in Qingdao. He returned to China in 1919 and became a senior member of the Omotokyo religious organization.
