A town in Nishitama County, bordering Ome City in the west of Tokyo. Occupying the basin of the Hirai River, a tributary of the Tama River, and the mountainous area on the eastern edge of the Kanto Mountains, the town was primarily involved in agriculture and forestry until the mid-1960s, but the population has increased as residential development has progressed on the plateau in the southeast near the Itsukaichi Line. A cement factory is located here, and the town is also famous for its long-standing production of stupas (stone tablets). The area around Mt. Hinode (902m) is a hiking spot that belongs to Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. There is a weeping oak tree (a natural monument) at Okuno Kojin Shrine. 28.07 km2 . 16,650 people (2010).
