…Inspired by the spread of Lutheranism, a more radical and popular Reformation movement emerged. This group, which was branded as “fanatics” by orthodox Lutherans such as Melanchthon, quickly manifested itself in Wittenberg, where Luther was retiring to the Wartburg, as a disturbance led by his colleague Karlstadt and others. The disturbance itself subsided when Luther returned to Wittenberg (spring 1522) out of concern for the situation, but this kind of radicalism, combined with the demands of the lower classes and peasants who wanted to change the traditional social system, spread to various places, creating the risk of disrupting the church order. …
