The main roles in Sanskrit drama are the hero, heroine, villain, and clown. The clown (vidū‐śaka) is of Brahmin origin, but is uneducated and has a strong appetite for material things, and performs a humorous role as a good opponent for the hero, the king. There are also other characters such as the connoisseur (viṭa) who is well versed in entertainment and worldly wisdom, and the śakāra, who is of lowly origin, easily angered, likes beautiful clothes, and makes big claims, and each has its own rules regarding their status, acting, and language.
