Arabic gum tree

A medium-to-large tree of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae), 6-10 meters tall. It grows wild in the dry grasslands of Arabia and Africa. Gum arabic is made by cutting the trunk of this species, secreting a yellow translucent sap that hardens and is then refined. It is mainly produced in Sudan and Senegal, and is harvested from December to June of the following year. A similar substance can be obtained from several other species of acacia, including this species, Vachellia nilotica (L.) PJHHurter et Mabb. ( A. arabica Willd.) and A. laeta R.Br.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の中高木で、高さ6～10メートル。アラビアとアフリカの乾燥草原に自生する。アラビアゴムは、本種の幹に切り口をつけ、分泌された黄色い半透明の樹液が固まったあと、精製したもの。主産地はスーダンとセネガルで、12月から翌年の6月にかけて採取する。本種のほかVachellia nilotica (L.) P.J.H.Hurter et Mabb.（A. arabica Willd.）、A. laeta R.Br.など、数種のアカシアからも類似の物質が得られる。
