Hino Sojo - Hino Sojo

Japanese: 日野草城 - ひのそうじょう
Hino Sojo - Hino Sojo

Haiku poet. Born in Tokyo. In 1917 (Taisho 6), he began composing haiku after coming across Takahama Kyoshi's poems. In August 1918, he had a poem selected for the Hototogisu magazine, and in 1921, he was a judge of haiku for Hototogisu. In 1924, he became a member of the Hototogisu magazine. During this time, he graduated from the Third High School and the Faculty of Law of Kyoto Imperial University, and in 1927, he published a collection of haiku called Hanagoori. In 1935, he founded Kikan, and stood at the very left of the new haiku movement, working to modernize haiku. The following year, he was expelled from the Hototogisu magazine. In the midst of a storm of oppression of new haiku, he left his position as leader of Kikan in 1941. After suffering the damage of the war and the hardships of the postwar period, he founded Seigen in 1949. He composed clear haiku amid the pain of illness. His haiku collections include "Blue Grass" (1932), "Yesterday's Flowers" (1935), "Afternoon of Life" (1953), and "Silver" (1956). Representative haiku include "A crane with a high fever drifts in the blue sky" and "I wipe the balls of my glasses even though I cannot see."
