A perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family, distributed from the Kanto region westward to the Nansei Islands and Taiwan. It commonly grows in sunny, dry roadsides and fields. It has long roots and thin stems that are 20-40 cm tall. The leaves are lanceolate, 2-5 cm long, hairy, and have slightly thick, white edges. Flowers appear from May to August, one at a time, facing upward at the end of the branches. The sepals are lanceolate and upright, and remain persistent even after flowering. The corolla is a bluish-purple funnel several mm in diameter, deeply lobed into five pieces, and opens into a star shape. The capsules are upright and dehiscent when ripe.
