In ancient times, people who spoke languages belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family moved eastward to the Indian subcontinent, while the other moved westward and southward to settle in Iran. Therefore, the names of gods and mythological content in the Avesta, the first Iranian document, have many similarities with those found in the Indian Vedic documents (especially the oldest, the Rig-Veda). During the Indo-Iranian common period dating back to the 2nd millennium BCE, gods were broadly divided into two groups: the Daevas/Devas (the Sanskrit form after the /) and the Ahuras/Asuras.

　インド･ヨーロッパ語族のインド･イラン語派に属する言語を話す人びとは，古代において一方は東へ向かってインド亜大陸に至り，もう一方は西方へ南下してイランに定着することになった。したがって，イラン語による最初の文献アベスター中の神名･神話内容は，インドのベーダ文献(特に最古の《リグ･ベーダ》)に見られるそれと共通な点が多い。前2千年紀にさかのぼるインド･イラン共通時代には，神々はダエーバ/デーバ神群(/の後はサンスクリット語形)とアフラ/アスラ神群の2群に大別されていた。
