A general term for various machines used to knit stockinettes. Knitting machines are broadly divided into weft knitting machines and warp knitting machines. The former are machines that form loops in the yarns across the width of the fabric and then connect these loops to create a knitted fabric, and include flat knitting machines, cotton (fully fashioned) knitting machines, circular knitting machines, and sock knitting machines. The latter are machines that form loops in warped warp yarns and then connect these to create a knitted fabric, and include tricot knitting machines, raschel knitting machines, and Milanese knitting machines.
