A sample book that collects small models and designs, and is found mainly in the fields of architecture, joinery, dyeing and weaving from the Edo period to the Meiji period. The most common of these are pattern sample books for kosode (shoulder sleeves) related to dyeing and weaving. These are called hinakata, hiinakata, hinagata, etc. and are representative of hinagata books. They are also called costume hinagata, pattern hinagata, kosode pattern hinagata, etc. These are considered important as materials to learn about the fashion trends in Japan at the time, especially their patterns and processing methods, and are like fashion books for Western clothing. It is said that there are about 120 to 130 types, starting with "Shinsen Ohiinakata" in 1666 (Kanbun 6) and "Banzai Hiinakata" in 1820 (Bunsei 3). Most of them are printed on wood boards in a single color of ink, with one picture per page bound in Japanese paper, and a pattern on the back of a kosode with both sleeves spread out.
